Every night is ladies’ night

Wednesday, 30th July, 2008

As I’ve been catching up on my blog reading lately I realised I never posted about the “Ladies’ Night” screening of Sex and the City that Kam and I went to… which is now ancient history in the blogosphere, but still.

My local Odeon sold tickets for a pre-screening private party in the bar, complete with a hunky shirtless waiter serving free champagne, cheap Cosmopolitans and Manhattans, and a jazz band led by a zany female singer in a pink wig and plastic “skirt” entertaining the crowd of overdressed women in cute shoes (myself included, I must confess) and the handful of reluctant men who floundered around awkwardly like fish out of water.

Sadly it wasn’t until we were standing there taking it all in, bemused, that I realised I had neither camera nor phone with me, so no pictures of either the hunk or the cabaret singer’s costume changes (think towering heels, stockings, leopard print). I know, I suck as even an amateur photographer.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a film where there was so much squealing and applause; it really was a fun atmosphere. I was reeled in from the first scene in the Diane von Furstenberg store — I almost had a squeeing moment of my own — and I can’t wait for the DVD just to ogle that Vivienne Westwood dress again.

But I have to say, I never really got the whole “Mr. Big” thing. I mean all through the series (most of which I caught up with in the last year on my beloved video-on-demand channel) I found myself hoping Carrie wouldn’t end up with him, and then he behaved so crappy in the film…

Basically I’m with Kim Cattrall:

“As Samantha and as Kim and as a fan of the show, I never thought he was good enough for her. I found him unreliable and incredibly selfish and so many things had to be on his terms,” she said.

“He was not interested in integrating except on very slim occasions, and he was very withholding even then … and I found him a horrific bore. I’ve met men like that, they’re those A-type personalities, and everything is on their terms. I don’t even want a friendship with somebody like that, because it’s so one-sided, never mind a relationship.”

Still, the Paramount Comedy Channel is making me very happy by showing a double bill of SATC every weeknight (we’re in early series 2 on the umpteenth go round as I type) followed by an episode of Coupling, which is one of the greatest combinations in the history of TV scheduling — even better than Channel 5’s recent Thursday night House/Grey’s Anatomy effort.

I’ve you’ve never seen Coupling, go here to watch some clips on YouTube, then buy all four series on DVD, because, trust me, that much funny never gets old.

A story from Moscow to France

Marina Anissina’s official website is so adorable. I didn’t even know it existed until today — I’ve been out of the loop on figure skating lately. Go check out the pretty graphics. There are some very cute wallpapers too.

Inspiration hit again today ( :) ) and I’ve created the layout for what will become my fanlisting collective. The page for my joined fanlistings is completely pathetic at the moment, and I’ve got a couple in mind that I want to apply for, so I might as well get the site all set up beforehand, to avoid going through all the migrating hassle that I did with this page. So it looks like I’ll be busy coding for the next few days.

Figure Skating!!

Sunday, 26th March, 2006

So the world championships are over (with the exception of the gala which Eurosport is showing live tonight…yay, they never show the whole gala live) and I felt like jotting down a few thoughts. Only a figure skating freak will have a clue what I’m talking about so if you haven’t been following the sport obsessively for the past few years feel free to skip it. :D First, I’m completely gutted because the workmen were pissing around with things while I was at work and tripped my electricity, so the compulsory dance didn’t record. I had a bad feeling something would happen but I had to work late and didn’t get home until it was nearly over. Argh!

Pairs
I don’t really care about pairs since Elena and Anton turned pro, but I still like Petrova/Tikhonov and Aliona Savchenko/partner whose name I’ve forgotten right now is definitely a team to watch. By the way, what’s up with Obertas/Slavnov??

Men
I’ve loved Stephane Lambiel since I went to Euros in 2002 — it was in Switzerland and impossible not to get caught up in the excitement for their boy — so it was great to see him skate so brilliantly. And yay for Joubert getting it together in the free. Sandhu could’ve been worse but why oh why can’t he be better and put down 2, or should I say 3, clean skates… I understand he did well on the Grand Prix circuit but we dont get to see that in Eurosportland!!

Dance
My beloved ice dance seems empty without Diva Navka, but congrats to Albena and Maxim — I didn’t really like them until I saw them live at Euros, and while they’ve never been my favourites, I can appreciate their voidiness. I’m gutted for Isa and Olivier — I love them and they always have my favourite free programs, but for some reason the judges must hate them. Sorting through my old skating tapes as I transfer them to DVD (a mammoth task) has reminded me how much I liked Margarita and Povilas; I’m so glad they came back and what a season it’s been for them — bronze at Euros, and a shame they didn’t make the podium here considering they were second on the free.

Much sympathy for Nora Hoffmann — getting a blade across the back during warm up just before you have to go on must be every skater’s nightmare. What a horrid thing to happen and boo to the ref for not letting them skate last in the group. Apparently word is she’s gonna be partner shopping during the off-season, which could be great if she finds someone as good as her — she has the makings of a future Dance Diva Star TM! She was one of the reasons I kept watching dance in that depressing first post-Marina and Gwendal season.

As I type I’m re-watching the free dance and Dubreuil/Lauzon are on. I’ve never really been able to get into their skating…they always have really difficult lifts but the rest seems kinda empty and zzzzz… I do like this sappy piece of music though. :D

Ladies
I have to say I just don’t like U.S. ladies’ skating — the arms annoy me no end and when I say I’m a Maria B fan from way back who misses her dearly that says it all really…for me jumps aren’t everything. Still, wow for Kimmie Meisner — her first World Championships and she skates away with the gold!

As they say at FSUniverse, “483783 depressions” for Elena Sokolova, aka Cupcake — she’s my fave ladies skater post-Masha and I’m gutted she didn’t get bronze after her fab short and free. My great discovery this Worlds was Kiira Korpi — how classy is she — and yay for Tugba Karademir — she stood out to me at Euros 02 but she doesn’t usually make it through to the free, so I’m glad we got to see her this time! Oh yeah and WTF happened to Viktoria Pavuk? She didn’t even qualify for the free… she was, what top five or something in her first Euros but it’s been ever downhill since… 74675 depressions!

Sooo…although it lacked the sheer drama of the Olympic original dance, Worlds has had some great moments!

Sports as political commentary

Wednesday, 22nd March, 2006

With the World Figure Skating Championships this week I came across this article from The Nation slating the NBC (as in “Neo-con Bellowing Corporation”) coverage of the Olympics with a larger point about provincialism:

America has never been a more dynamic, multicultural society and the world has never been more of a global village, but NBC still treats the games as if it were 1980 and the United States were taking on the Eastern Bloc. As Florida writer Pierre Tristam wrote in his blog, “NBC covers the Olympics the way American neocons do foreign policy: The world is 95 percent America, 3 percent water, and 2 percent everything else…”

The World Championships are over, so it’s time for a new layout, yay! I did some rearranging and I’m working on the content links to the left. I’m liking the way it looks!

I can not believe how fast the week has gone – Worlds has finished already! And Lena got her silver – she was excellent! I was watching old competition tapes and it reminded me how much I miss the way it used to be; around 1998-2000 it was so exciting, and the quality of skating at the top is not quite the same anymore. Of course, I’m already looking forward to next season and this one’s barely over :)

Just remembered I said something about getting my skating photos up by the end of last week. Yeah, well. Ha. I have been working on the Trek fan fiction site though, so that’s almost ready to go. It’s only been listed under my collective for almost a month. Trust me to create the button before the site  . There’s new buttons for this layout too, if you wanna link me *hint*, *hint*. And they look better.

Ugh, the stupid ‘m’ button is still giving me stress. I swear, you don’t realise how often you use ‘that letter’ until it refuses to appear in your sentences and you have to go back over all of them (ha! It worked!)

On the subject of spelling, when are people going to learn how to spell ‘congratulations’?? It’s really quite simple – the word has no ‘d’ in it. At all. In any dictionary. Trust me. And spell it right. Thanks.

Ooh, I noticed my counter’s passed 100 hits! Cool.

And that’s all for today :D

I’ve been too busy watching the figure skating to go online much, and I only have one thing to say – the ‘interim’ judging system must die!! I mean basically the medals are decided based on luck – whichever marks get randomly picked by the computer decide who wins. Ick. What kind of ‘competition’ is that?? And of course I’m feeling reeeaaaally bad for Irina & Ilia; the marks were so close to gold and they even got a 6.0. But even more so my babies Tatiana and Roman – I love their free dance (although I *always* love their free dance), and their presentation marks were better than Albena & Maxim (who are cool too) but they didn’t get bronze. Sigh. I can’t wait until next season though; hopefully I’ll be able to get to competitions again. Watching on TV just can’t compare to actually being in the arena. And hanging out at the skaters’ hotel is always fun. Talking of which this is to make me feel better, although for some reason I can’t find the clearer version:

Gwendal Peizerat in the Movenpick lobby in Lausanne, Euros 2002

Anyway, time to get ready for the ladies free program, starting in half an hour. Can’t wait to see Lena Sokolova – I’ve been a fan since ‘98 so I’m glad to see her finally doing so great. Her short program was excellent and I love her free; a silver medal would be fantastic. Go Lena!

This or That Tuesday 25/03

Tuesday, 25th March, 2003

Grrr, I hit a new height (or is that low) of stupidity today – I set the video to record skating and forgot to put the cable on the right channel. So now I have 3 hours of blue screen and the last 30 minutes of the compulsory dance, after all the teams I wanted to see had already skated of course. Typical that the one time the compulsories are actually shown I mess up, and just my luck that it’s the only part of the competition that British Eurosport isn’t gonna repeat. That’s what I get for daring to leave the house while skating’s on. If anyone can get me a tape of it I’ll love you forever, LOL. Anyway, here’s This or That Tuesday:

This or That Tuesday

1. Poetry or prose? Poetry. Although prose can be just as powerful.
2. Funky modern art or the older, “classic” variety? Classic.
3. Sculptures or paintings? Paintings.
4. Theatre: exuberant musical or serious drama? Probably serious drama, I suppose. I don’t go to the theatre anywhere near as much as I’d like.
5. Ballet or modern dance? I’ve always wanted to go to a ballet.
6. Movies: major studio or indie? Since I’m in love with the golden era of cinema, I’d have to go with major studio – all those fab MGM and Warner films.
7. Authors: Shakespeare or Dr. Seuss? Shakespeare.
8. TV: PBS or A&E? We don’t have either here, although I quite liked PBS when I was in Canada.
9. Music: Beethoven or Beatles? Hmmm, depends on my mood.
10. Thought-provoking question of the week: You are a contributing member of your favorite art museum, and visit on a regular basis. They announce a new, temporary special exhibit by an artist surrounded by controversy…this person’s work and/or political views offend you. Do you stop supporting the museum, or just stay away during the time the exhibit is there? I’d stay away – I might not like that particular exhibit, but everyone has a right to their own opinions. And if it was my favourite art museum, it would have plenty of other things I did like that I’d wanna continue contributing to.

New layout

Monday, 24th March, 2003

Ok, as much as I loved the purple, I wanted a new layout for the World Figure Skating Championships, which started today. Featuring the skaters I miss and wish were gonna be there: Maria Butyrskaya, Elena Berezhnaya & Anton Sikharulidze, Marina Anissina & Gwendal Peizerat and Alexei Yagudin. Photos were taken by me :D .

I know the tagboard looks weird but my stupid self forgot the password so I can’t change it, LOL. Anyway, hopefully I’ll have a new skating photos site up by the end of the week, ‘cos the old one was on free space and I let the account expire.

Sending positive vibes to Tatiana & Roman, Irina & Ilia, Isa & Olivier, Galit & Sergei, Elena S, Stan, E-man…yeah, you get the picture!
